Brianna Ghey

Content warning: murder, transphobia, hate crime

We are deeply saddened by the brutal murder of Brianna Ghey. Brianna was only 16 years old and was a ‘much loved daughter, granddaughter, and baby sister’.

We are thinking of her family and friends and sending our love and our deepest condolences. We also are thinking of those in the trans community who will find Brianna’s murder particularly triggering, especially at a time with so much discrimination and violence directed towards the trans community. We are disgusted that even in the reporting of Brianna’s murder, some publications continue to show their transphobia by using Brianna’s deadname.

Though police have not confirmed yet whether her murder was a hate crime, 53% of trans people aged 18 to 24 have experienced a hate crime or incident based on their gender identity in the last 12 months. This is horrific and needs to end.

If you are a trans woman and have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse or sexual violence our free advice line is here to support you: 0808 552 5565. Galop are a specialist organisation with decades of experiencing supporting LGBTQ+ people who have experienced abuse.
