Tech-facilitated abuse is the use of technology to control, harass, threaten or monitor someone, often as part of a wider pattern of domestic abuse. It can make survivors feel like there is no safe space, even in their own homes.
Tech-facilitated abuse may include:
- Tracking your location through apps or devices
- Hacking into your email or social media accounts
- Constant unwanted messages or calls
- Sharing or threatening to share private images
- Using smart home devices to intimidate or control
- Monitoring your online activity or contacts
- Impersonating you online
- Installing spyware on your devices
Because technology is such a big part of everyday life, tech abuse can feel inescapable. It often goes hand-in-hand with other forms of coercive control, making it harder for survivors to seek help or regain independence.
Tech-facilitated abuse can be difficult to detect, especially when the abuser knows passwords, has access to shared devices, or frames their actions as “protective” or “caring.” Survivors may feel anxious, paranoid, or unsafe without being able to explain exactly why.
This type of abuse can happen in any relationship and is never the survivor’s fault. Everyone has the right to use technology without fear or surveillance.
