Susan’s Story
After 20 years of coercive control and emotional, physical, sexual and verbal abuse, Susan made the difficult decision to leave her abuser. Alongside her children, she was placed in a hostel where she could begin rebuilding her life and access specialist support, including help from Solace.
In the early days, practical support made a significant difference. Solace secured a grant that funded a courier to deliver donated clothing for Susan’s children. The remaining funds enabled her to purchase a travel card, helping her attend appointments and access essential services.
Solace also supported Susan with her immigration journey by providing a letter to strengthen her visa application. Alongside this, Solace staff accompanied her to GP appointments, advocating for her mental health needs and helping secure a referral to a psychiatrist. This led to a formal PTSD diagnosis and appropriate monitoring as she began treatment. Looking towards the future, Solace arranged a call with a university to explore Susan’s ambition of starting a degree.
Today, Susan has been granted a 30-month visa with recourse to public funds, as well as permission to work and study. She has received her National Insurance number and her first Universal Credit payment, giving her greater stability and independence as she plans for the future.
“I don’t know what I would have done without you, I am so grateful that you entered my life when you did. If you’re thinking of reaching out – do. Solace will help you overcome your hardest days and worst fears.”
